What the article is about
A hot kiln alignment is normally performed once every 1–2 years. The article looks at what happens in between: a kiln keeps changing because of wear, operating temperature and process conditions, so a small mechanical change can go unnoticed until the next scheduled survey. Routine measurements performed by the plant's own maintenance team can close that gap.
The article covers:
- Tyre migration — why it should be checked regularly, and why both increasing and decreasing trends deserve attention
- Why migration values must be recorded alongside shell and tyre temperatures, so mechanical changes can be separated from thermal effects
- Tyre axial run-out and roller shaft deflection — how repeated measurements at the same location reveal changing support conditions
- A practical inspection schedule — which parameters plant staff can check daily, weekly and monthly, and which belong to specialist surveys
- A case study from a European cement plant, where routine MMD measurements caught a rising tyre axial run-out trend (from about 1.2 mm to 2.6 mm over 12 weeks) and led to corrective work at the next planned stoppage
The role of the MMD Kiln Inspection Tool
